So much to do during summer, so there will be just one book challenge for July and August. Below are the rules for my two challenges: book and general culture challenge for July and August 2014.
A to Z 2014 World Books Challenge
You can still join the challenge. See the rules of 2014 World Books Challenge.
July & August Rules
- Read books from your shelves. Can be fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.
- Read one book of your country’s writer.
- Read one book written by a foreign writer.
- Don’t reread! Read the books that were standing long on your shelves, without being ever read.
- Read a book in language that is foreign for you.
2014 World Culture Challenge
See the rules of the 2014 World Culture Challenge if you want to join it.
July & August Rules
- The theme is geography and travelling.
- Choose two of the following activities:
- Travel to a place you haven’t been before but which somehow connects with culture. It might be in your town, close to your town or further away. It might be a museum, a culture festival, etc.
- Read a non-fiction book focused on travelling or geography.
- Watch a non-fiction film/TV series focused on travelling or geography.
- Go for an exhibition related to travelling or geography.
- Write a review about one of those things.
- Enjoy yourself!
Continuing my challenge around the world, I read books: set in Argentine (fiction) and in Czech (non-fiction). Written in few last years (non-fiction) and in 40s (fiction).
Title: Szczury. Przyobleka się w cienie. (The Rats. Shadow Play)
Author: Jose Bianco.
Publisher: Wydawnictwo Literackie, 1977
Two stories set in Argentine, with different characters but both quite psychological. The first one (The Rats) is focused on family and its friends. The second one is a story of a girl, working as a prostitute, and her mentally disabled brother. They are good, nothing exceptional, but both endings are just strong, making the stories memorable and worthy of recommendation.
My opinion: 7/10.
Also for the challenge: Around the World in 12 Books.
Title: Zrób sobie raj (Make Your Own Paradise)
Author: Mariusz Szczygieł
Publisher: Wydawnictwo Czarne, 2010
Pages: 292, with photos
A book based on interviews with Czech, author’s travels and knowledge. A great book by a famous Polish Czechophile. His style is light, making you either smile or laugh and just making you devour the book. I think there is no need to recommend it to fans of Mariusz Szczygieł (I became one!) or Czech. I’d recommend it too to those who aren’t interested in Czech or for lovers of quality books.
My opinion: 10/10.
Also for the challenge: Polacy nie gęsi II and 2014 Full House Challenge.
Here are the June rules for the A to Z 2014 World Books Challenge. Remember, you can join any time, and read the books in any order you like. The June rules are slightly different.
Read two books from any countries that were listed in previous months, and you still haven’t read any book from those countries. The monthly rules for selecting the books are not important in this month. You get the free choice, from the selected countries.
Here are the previous monthly rules:
- January 2014 challenge.
- February 2014 challenge.
- March 2014 challenge.
- April 2014 challenge.
- May 2014 challenge.
Read a book in your non-native language.
Looking for books from Brazil on the library’s shelves, I found one small and thin book. Finally not the big and long books I stuck with from the last time. I got to read the description and one sentence especially got into me. “There is a right to shout, so I shout.”
Originally selected for the A to Z 2014 World Books Challenge, but it’s also suitable for 2014 Full House Reading Challenge and Around the World in 12 Books.
